South Pacific surfing holidays are gaining a growing reputation amongst the world's top surfers. Almost all breaks here are over coral reefs. One slip and you might be carved up by the sharp edges of the coral heads that sometimes are just one foot beneath you. This is thrill surfing at its best, but not for the light hearted. A definite no-no for beginners!.

The surfing season in the South pacific is opposite to that of Hawaii which lies north of the equator in the North pacific. The most reliable season is in winter beteen May and October when storms from the south are blow up from New Zealand and the Antartic. These waves dominate on the south coast of the larger islands and on southern breaking reefs. Sumnmer surfing between Novemnber and April is best on the northern coastlines of the larger islands.

Fiji has long enjoyed a world class reputation as having some of the most challenging and reliable reef breaks in the world. Rip Curl host several international tournaments here and there are a handful of dedicated surf resorts around the islands.

Tahiti also has a great reputation, and the famed Teahupoo is one of the most feared breaks in the world with waves often topping 30 feet in height. However, local Tahitians have become increasingly protective over their surf rights and are not the most gracious hosts on the waves. he main island also has some of the few beach breaks in the South Pacific, on both the north shore and south shore.

For those looking for great waves and virtually no crowds, head to
Samoa. Here you'll find some great summer and winter breaks and access to them is relatively easy.

Tonga has a couple of good breaks but has little tourist infrastructure. If you can find your
self a boatman, you can get to a few nice breaks if your timing is right.

The Cook Islands has a couple of tame breaks around Rarotonga but this is for local enjoyment rather than hardened surfers.
